Brock Purdy has continued to divide opinion even as the San Francisco 49ers quarterback has enjoyed a spectacular first full season as the starter.
The dissenting voices are quieter after Purdy led the Niners on a miraculous comeback in the NFC Championship Game, San Francisco recovering from a 24-7 deficit against the Detroit Lions to prevail 34-31 and progress to Super Bowl 58.
Purdy's story is of course made all the more incredible by his status as the final pick in the 2022 draft, and he has a fan in a man who is extremely familiar by being motivated by being made to wait to hear his name called, who also happens to be the quarterback Purdy defeated in his first start last season.
Tom Brady appeared on 'The Pat McAfee Show' on Tuesday, and the greatest of all time had significant praise for Purdy when the boyhood Niners fan was asked about the quarterback attempting to lead San Francisco to its first Super Bowl title since Brady was just 17 years old.
"I think Brock's done a great job with the opportunity," Brady said.
"He got it, and he's taken advantage of it. He was a late-round pick. I know he's got a chip on his shoulder, and he wants to go out there and prove every day that he's the right fit for that team.
"Again, it's a great organization they're running. I really respect [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan], but Brock's done a hell of a job."
Purdy this month told ESPN's Nick Wagoner that him being the starter this year depended on whether or not the 49ers could lure Brady out of retirement.
Asked about the 49ers' prior interest in him, Brady responded: "In this last season, there's a lot of different things that people would suggest, but I kind of just kept my mind focused on where I wanted to go. Again, this was a great year for me to sit back and watch and learn and get prepared for being in the FOX booth next year."
