When news came down earlier in the week that Brock Purdy was dealing with an injury, the Wednesday practice report and update would be a significant development for his availability in Week 2.

News came from Kyle Shanahan surrounding the shoulder and toe injury that Purdy is dealing with, and not only did Purdy miss the first practice of the week, but he could miss the next few weeks as he rehabs, putting his status against the New Orleans Saints in serious jeopardy.

49ers QB Brock Purdy likely to miss Saints game

“If Purdy can’t go for the Niners, it is a huge change for New Orleans. Purdy is a really impressive distributor with the right weapons around him. If it’s Mac Jones instead, the floor of play is notably lower. Not to mention, the 49ers will be without star tight end George Kittle, who was placed on injured reserve. Brandon Aiyuk remains on the shelf. Jauan Jennings is also banged up, but he could suit up Sunday. This puts even more focus on Ricky Pearsall as well, who impressed plenty in Week 1…

” . . .I’d imagine the SF offense would want to dominate on the ground with Christian McCaffrey and control the clock, too. That pushes the Saints offense to take advantage of every possession they get, regardless of if they get in the end zone. Flip the field, get in field goal range, don’t turn the ball over…

” . . .New Orleans wants to get Kellen Moore his first victory as an NFL head coach. Playing against a Purdy-less 49ers squad would certainly sway those chances in their favor a bit more.”

The 49ers already placed George Kittle on injured reserve earlier this week, and now they are likely to be without their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. We’ll see if Coach Shanahan can make things work with the QB many believed he wanted to draft years ago: Mac Jones.
