Brock Purdy might still have plenty of people outside the 49ers' organization to win over, but it's clear he has the highest respect from his teammates.
They illustrated that on Wednesday, when it was revealed the quarterback, set to begin his first full year as the starter for the Niners, was named as one of their six team captains for the 2023 season.
He joins Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Trent Williams, Arik Armstead and Fred Warner on the list of captains.
Purdy could hardly have done more to win over his teammates, leading the 49ers on a seven-game winning streak as a starter and helping them win eight games in a row overall counting his effort in relief of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13 as San Francisco surged to the NFC Championship Game with the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft at the helm.
On top of that, he bravely tried to come back into the conference title game in the second half in Philadelphia after tearing his elbow ligament, a concussion suffered by Josh Johnson leaving the Niners without a healthy quarterback.
Throw in his hugely impressive recovery from elbow surgery in March and it's no surprise the 49ers felt him worthy of the title of captain.
Asked about the vote, Kyle Shanahan explained the experiences of last year play a key role in Purdy being seen as a leader by his teammates and his head coach.
Shanahan said:
“Yeah, I do. I definitely do [see Purdy as a leader]. It’s when you go out and you play like he did last year, that’s what it is. I mean, it’s hard to be seen as a leader when you haven’t been out there before. Guys can think you’re a leader, you can act like a leader, but guys don’t follow many people who don’t produce on the field and I think that’s why he got so many votes this year because I think they believed in him and felt he was one of the leaders last year. Not because he’s being some vet and talking to guys a certain way, just because of how he prepares, that they can count on him and how he handled a number of situations when he got in there.”
With seven full games of tape on Purdy, defenses will undoubtedly throw some new situations at Purdy across the course of the 2023 campaign, but everything he has put on the field to date suggests the 49ers' least experienced captain will be able to rise to those challenges.

It’s not likely to happen.
