Throughout an electric start to his NFL career, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has seen caveats consistently placed on his remarkable success.

Those caveats have predominantly surrounded a supporting cast jam packed with superstars and a head coach in Kyle Shanahan who is widely regarded as the pre-eminent play-caller of the era.

On Sunday, when the 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3, Purdy will be without at least two members of that supporting cast. Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey remains on injured reserve with a calf injury and Achilles tendinitis, while Deebo Samuel is out with a calf strain

On top of that, All-Pro tight end George Kittle missed Thursday's practice with a hamstring injury, placing his participation for the game in doubt.

The Rams' defense was ranked 31st by Expected Points Added per play prior to Thursday Night Football, but a game in which he will potentially be without three key members of his offense will be seen by some as a referendum on Purdy's ability to excel in less than ideal circumstances.

Yet Purdy's approach to that challenge will be no different to any other game.

“Yeah, obviously it sucks not having your guys like Deebo and Christian and stuff, so it’s like, alright, how can we figure out to get the ball to other guys and stuff? But man, we’ve got playmakers. I’ve said that before," Purdy said when asked about the absences of some of the 49ers' stars.

"We’ve got a really good scheme, great play caller and some great players that step up in the roles and do their job really well. So for me, I still have to do my job, in terms of my reads and my progressions, more so than I need to now change the way I think and make sure I’m getting it to this guy or that guy because a couple guys are out. It’s not like that.

"That’s the challenge for me, is how can I continue to be better with my progressions and as a quarterback and handling situations, being as efficient as I can regardless of who is in. That’s where my mindset is at with this game. And obviously, I’d love to have my guys back and playing with them, but that’s just how it is with this game sometimes.”

Purdy's comments are reflective of a player who has rarely seemed daunted by any situation he has encountered since being parachuted into the starting lineup as a rookie taken with the final pick of the draft in 2022.

Even with injuries to key players mounting, the last thing the 49ers need at this early point in a long season is a sense of panic. They need their quarterback to project calm in a tricky situation. Thankfully, Purdy knows no other way in which to operate.
