49ers Week 1 victory could come with a massive cost after HC Kyle Shanahan gives gloomy injury update on QB Brock Purdy
The going is about get tough for the 49ers.
The San Francisco 49ers overcame a hard-fought division game against the Seattle Seahawks to come away 1-0 in Week 1. It was an up-and-down game from Brock Purdy, as he had some interceptions that were a little out of character for him and the 49ers offense.
Well, on Monday, HC Kyle Shanahan addressed the media and his remarks may have explained part of the reason why. Brock Purdy is dealing with both a toe and shoulder injury that may sideline him for Week 2, leaving Mac Jones as the potential starter.
Brock Purdy is dealing with a shoulder, toe injury that could sideline him
Purdy who was just paid this offseason, is the oil to the 49ers’ engine. He may not be a top-10 quarterback, but he’s why Shanahan and general manager John Lynch still have jobs right now. If not for his rising to prominence after the team missed on Trey Lance, there is a world where a new regime is in the Bay Area.
On Sunday, Purdy had his moments. He threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns on a sky-high 74.3 percent completion rate. But he also tried to cash a few checks his arm couldn’t, tossing two interceptions to a sturdy Seahawks defense.
As stated by Shanahan, the toe is the more serious injury here which makes sense given the shoudler injury is on his non-throwing arm. An underrated portion of Purdy’s game is his ability to manuever the pocket and ultimately escape pressure if need be, so the toe is one to watch, espeically if it lingers.
That being said, anticipating any player, but especially the quarterback, to miss a full week of practice is never a good sign for one’s availability, though Shanahan didn’t close the door entriely on him participating.
The injuries continue to mount in San Francisco.
