The 49ers succeeded in stashing Qwuantrezz Knight on the practice squad last season. They tried to do it for a second year, but will now see the versatile defensive back play against them next month.
The Cardinals, having placed starting safety Budda Baker on injured reserve, signed Knight off the 49ers’ practice squad and to their active roster.
San Francisco does have an open spot on the active roster after placing cornerback Samuel Womack III on injured reserve before their Week 2 win over the Rams.
They could have used that to promote Knight, who can play safety and both corner spots and, in preseason appearances, proved very effective attacking downhill near the line of scrimmage.
Instead, the 49ers will now face Knight when they meet the winless Cardinals in Week 4.
It is the third player the Cardinals have taken from the 49ers, having also signed impressive rookie offensive tackle Ilm Manning and guard Keith Ismael after they were waived by San Francisco on cutdown day, preventing the Niners from stashing them on the practice squad.
Now thanks to Arizona’s latest decision to acquire another potential hidden gem from San Francisco, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have holes to fill on the active roster and the practice squad.
