The San Francisco 49ers' trade deadline move for Chase Young did more than just give them another stellar pass rusher, it allowed the former second overall pick to achieve an ambition he assumed he'd never get to fulfil.
San Francisco acquired Young, the No. 2 selection in the 2020 draft, in a trade with the Washington Commanders. The 49ers only had to part with a compensatory third-round pick to secure the former Defensive Rookie of the Year.
The most fascinating aspect of the deal is that it pairs Young with reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa, the second pick of the 49ers in the 2019 draft, reuniting them after their brief time as college teammates at Ohio State.
They played together in 2017 and 2018. However, Bosa shut his '18 season down early after undergoing core muscle surgery and then declared for the draft. He played only three games in his final year with the Buckeyes.
Though Ohio State fans never really got to see the full potential of what a Bosa-Young edge rush duo could become, the 49ers will now be able to witness them rekindle their partnership in the pros, and the newest member of a stacked defensive line made no attempt to hide his excitement.
Asked about his thoughts when he learnt of the trade, Young took something of a shot at his former employers, saying: "I wasn't mad. Nick is here. Always been a big brother to me. Stepping in here today, just a culture, the vibe is a lot different. I definitely know I'm in the building with winners."
Expanding on his relationship with Bosa, Young added: "It was literally like five minutes after they did it [the trade] that he called me.
"Even in college we never thought we'd be able to play with each other again. It's a blessing. I'm glad to be around a player of his caliber. I think it's going to be just like in college. A race to the quarterback. It's going to be real fun, that's all I know."
Bosa and Young both worked under legendary Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson, giving them a shared pass rush vocabulary that appears likely to smooth Young's transition to the 49ers' defense.
"I would say we definitely speak the same language in terms of pass rush, using our hands," said Young. "It's definitely easy to talk to him about the plays and the playbook now."
Young's first opportunity to display how quickly he has picked up that playbook should come on Sunday when the 49ers visit the Jacksonville Jaguars.
