The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will battle it out for a Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday but before, Patrick Mahomes might've inadvertently drawn the ire of Niners fans.
On one of the most wholesome moments of the league's Super Bowl opening night, Mahomes talked to 11-year-old reporter Jeremiah Fennell on NFL Network.
Fennell, who stole the show all night long, threw the gameplan out the window to keep it fun with Mahomes before he started talking to all the other reporters waiting to get a question in. Instead he proposed an impromptu fantasy football draft with three rules: They both got Pat at QB, all-time players were allowed, and Chiefs teammates were not.
Inadvertently or not, Mahomes took a jab at Niners history when the time came to pick wide receivers. He had dibs on any WR he wanted to take. All-time! You know, a ten-time First-Team All-Pro would've been nice. Maybe somebody who averaged 13.7 touchdowns per season in a span of 11 years wouldn't have hurt. But that's just me, not him.
Instead of Jerry Rice though, Mahomes picked Randy Moss after letting out a long "umm." Listen, I know it might've been Patrick's honest pick in a hypothetical, made-up fantasy team. But he's not new to the media week chaos and hearing it I really thought this was him going out of his way to avoid giving the Niners any love ahead of the second Super Bowl match-up he'll have against them.
That hypothesis went down the drain when the pair got to cornerback. The Chiefs quarterback was quick to steal the elephant in the room.
"Deion Sanders, easy," said Mahomes emphatically.
I guess there's only so much you can do to not pick a Niners legend for an all-time make-believe football squad.
