Christian McCaffrey and 49ers receive excellent injury news ahead of Week 15 matchup against the Titans
McCaffrey surprisingly popped up on the injury report over the weekend, but he’s expected to play against the Titans.
The San Francisco 49ers’ weekend got a little rocky on Saturday when Christian McCaffrey was unexpectedly added to the injury report with a back issue.
Fortunately for both parties, any bit of worry was quickly alleviated Sunday morning. Per the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, McCaffrey should be good to go despite the injury.
McCaffrey should have success against a questionable Titans defense
The Tennessee Titans’ defense allows 4.5 yards per carry on the ground through 14 weeks. That’s tied for ninth-worst. Jeffery Simmons and Co. have allowed 18 rushing touchdowns on the season, which is tied for second-most.
When it comes to running backs in the passing game, the defense has given up 44 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns on the year. Those numbers rank 28th, 19th, and 16th, respectively. While they’re above average, the Titans allow 0.04 EPA/attempt to running backs, and RBs average a 47.5% success rate, which ranks 13th and 12th, respectively.
In other words, running backs may not pile up a ton of yards, catches, and touchdowns against the Titans in the passing game, but opposing ball carriers can have efficient success, and a player like McCaffrey could break things open in that regard.
49ers’ offense is pretty healthy heading into the final month
Brandon Aiyuk drama aside, the 49ers offense is pretty damn healthy heading into the final month of the season, which is huge considering the team is just a game away from leading the NFC West. It gets even better when realizing the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams still have to play each other one more time, and the 49ers get a chance to sweep the ‘Hawks in the season finale.
It’s a major credit to Kyle Shanahan and everyone to be in this spot despite all the injury issues this year. Guys like Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, and Fred Warner are done for the year, and both Brock Purdy and George Kittle were out for multiple games at one point. To lose that much star power, yet remain in the thick of the division hunt (in what is the best division in the NFL, by the way) speaks to what this team is capable of.
It all starts Sunday against the Titans. The final month of the season should be quite entertaining, and it’ll be intriguing to see how everything shakes out.
