The San Francisco 49ers' first half with the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round was extremely hard fought, and it cost them one of their premier weapons.
Deebo Samuel was reported as questionable to return with a shoulder injury late in the second quarter. San Francisco ended the half leading 7-6. He was then ruled out at the start of the second half.
San Francisco's star wide receiver had earlier been evaluated for a head injury following a hit to the head from Jaire Alexander on the opening offensive series for the Niners.
He was cleared and came back into the game, only to then leave the field again and head to the locker room. Samuel came back out to the sideline but headed back to the locker room again at the two minute warning.
While San Francisco's prolific offense was able to find the endzone without him, his absence removes much of the versatility from the Kyle Shanahan offense, with his abilities as both a runner and receiver, along with his threat when going in motion, key for putting opposing linebackers in conflict.
Save for that first series, the 49ers moved the ball well on the Green Bay defense despite Samuel's lack of involvement. However his absence will make the Niners' challenge in overcoming a spirited young Packers team that much harder.
49ers end defensive starter’s season in series of roster moves
He won’t play a part in the playoffs.
