Kyle Shanahan confirmed what everybody knew would be the outcome after De'Vondre Campbell refused to go into the game in the third quarter of the San Francisco 49ers' defeat to the Los Angeles Rams.
Speaking to reporters in a conference call after a Thursday Night Football loss that effectively ended the Niners' season, head coach Shanahan said Campbell would not be with the team for next week's game with the Miami Dolphins.
Shanahan said of Campbell's decision not to enter the game in place of Dre Greenlaw: "It's not something you can do and still be a part of our team."
He added that the 49ers are still "working through the semantics" of how to handle the situation with the veteran linebacker.
That likely means the 49ers have not yet decided whether to suspend Campbell for his walkout or to simply release him.
Campbell's one-year contract features a $1.21 million base salary. However, with a refusal to play violating the deal, he could forfeit the remainder of that. It also contains a $20,000 per game roster bonus. In other words, Campbell's actions will cost him at least $60,000 and potentially much more.
And, with Shanahan revealing he has had no contact with Campbell since the incident, it could be a while before we know his reasons for an inexplicable decision in a game the 49ers simply had to win.
Greenlaw, who complained of soreness on his long-awaited return from the Achilles injury he suffered in last season's Super Bowl, is day to day, Shanahan said. Fellow linebacker Dee Winters has the same status.
As well as All-Pro Fred Warner, the 49ers also have Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles on the depth chart. Flannigan-Fowles went into the game following Campbell's refusal.
In addition, Jalen Graham and DaShaun White are on the practice squad, with the former likely to be promoted once Campbell is removed from the roster.
