49ers' Dre Greenlaw explains his bizarre interception return

George Kittle was not exaggerating. Everyone associated with the San Francisco 49ers had the exact same thought as Dre Greenlaw continued to try to dodge his way past Green Bay Packers players after his game-sealing second interception of Jordan Love. That thought consisted of only two words: 'get down'.
Niners linebacker Greenlaw appeared to have no such thought on his mind after picking off a throw back across the middle of the field from the Green Bay quarterback, inexplicably looking to gain extra yardage and risking a fumble that would have kept the game alive for Green Bay.
Fortunately, he did not pay the price, holding on to the ball to seal a thrilling 24-21 win in the divisional round matchup that punched the Niners' ticket to a third successive NFC Championship Game.
Still, it was a question on the lips of many in the press conference room at Levi's Stadium, what was Greenlaw thinking?
Greenlaw, though, had a convenient answer, pinning the blame on his running mate at the linebacker position, Fred Warner.
"Fred told me I was supposed to get a pick-six, so it was kind of his fault," Greenlaw joked at the podium afterwards.
He added: "But yeah I know I need to go down."
With his bizarre actions after his second pick going unpunished, Greenlaw was able to revel in a hugely impactful display, having earlier picked off Love on a tipped ball to end any chance of them scoring on a drive that began on their own 38-yard line in the third quarter.
It was a performance that came after Greenlaw was listed as questionable with Achilles tendinitis but, in the mind of the one of the 49er defense's tone-setters, there was never any doubt he was going to play.
"I wasn't going to sit out this game for anything," said Greenlaw. "It definitely felt great knowing that you battled through all this, you barely practiced all week and you got the chance to go out there and make some plays. I'm just doing this for my teammates, I knew they wanted me to play and I knew I wanted to play so I was going to make sure I did everything to get in this game."
After his instrumental display, the 49ers will be delighted Greenlaw gutted it out, even if he managed to terrify everyone in the stadium with his unexpected and bizarre decision-making.
