George Kittle is setting the record straight over his absence at the beginning of the voluntary offseason program.
On Wednesday, The Athletic's Dianna Russini posted that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy's attendance at OTAs "is a positive sign as extension talks continue," while Kittle's "absence is also contract related."
Russini added that the two sides are far apart on a deal.
"Kittle wants to become the NFL’s highest-paid tight end, per a league source. Trey McBride reset the market earlier this offseason; the 25-year-old inked a four-year, $76 million pact with Arizona. San Francisco’s offers to Kittle have thus far been rebuffed, and the two sides remain apart as Kittle, who will be 32 in October, enters the final year of his deal. I’m told no trade request has been made, but other teams are keeping an eye on it," Russini wrote in her NFL Draft buzz piece.
However, Kittle went on X, formerly known as Twitter, and directly responded to Russini's post.
"Your source is incorrect," Kittle commented.
Kittle is entering the final year of his extension, which he signed in 2020. If his contract remains where it is right now, Kittle is set to make $15 million this season, with a $22.026 million cap hit.
But, he wants a new deal that will keep him in San Francisco for a while longer.
And according to him, there's no bad blood as his absence has nothing to do with the contract. Plus considering his source is himself, it's definitely trustworthy.
Signs point to Brock Purdy getting a major extension soon, but the outlook for George Kittle’s 49ers future is far less certain
