The 49ers' ownership now officially has control of an English soccer club, meaning one of the key figures in their front office will now be an extremely busy man.
On Monday, the strategic arm of the franchise, '49ers Enterprises' had its takeover of Leeds United approved.
While seismic news for a soccer club that was relegated from the Premier League last season, the announcement was probably met with a shrug by most 49ers fans.
But the takeover is significant, as the man who oversees contract negotiations for the 49ers, executive vice president of football operations Paraag Marathe, has been appointed chairman of Leeds.
Marathe's role with the 49ers will not change. He has become an integral part of the 49ers' organization that has developed a reputation for succeeding in tying star players down to lucrative but ultimately team-friendly contracts because of how the Niners structure those deals.
Marathe and the 49ers will look to sign Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa to such a deal before the season starts. Bosa is likely to become the NFL's highest-paid edge rusher after an 18.5-sack campaign in 2022.
Managing the finances of the 49ers roster while simultaneously running an English soccer club will be no mean feat. However, Marathe, who was previously Leeds' vice chairman, described taking on his new role as a "privilege".
And if he succeeds in getting Leeds back among English soccer's elite, that will only be a good thing for the 49ers and their wider business.
