The feel-good story around Dre Greenlaw's return from the devastating Achilles injury he suffered in Super Bowl 58 lasted a little over two quarters.

Now the San Francisco 49ers linebacker's short-lived 2024 season is over.

Kyle Shanahan confirmed in his press conference on Thursday that Greenlaw will not play in either of the Niners' final two games of the season.

Greenlaw made his long-awaited return in Week 15 as the 49ers suffered defeat to the Los Angeles Rams but left the game in the third quarter complaining of soreness in his knee and Achilles after producing a standout display across the first two quarters.

He recovered to start last week's loss to the Miami Dolphins as the Niners' playoff hopes came to an end, but Greenlaw was pulled out of the game in the first quarter.

With the 49ers out of contention, the Niners have elected not to risk playing Greenlaw as their season draws to a close, with the linebacker among five players held out of practice on Thursday ahead of San Francisco's Monday Night Football matchup with the Detroit Lions.

Included in that group is Trent Williams, who has been placed on injured reserve.

Guards Aaron Banks (knee) and Spencer Burford (calf) were also confirmed by Shanahan as sitting out Thursday's session, with the 49er offensive line in disarray ahead of their final home game of the season.

Defensive end Robert Beal Jr. (ankle) would also miss out, according to Shanahan, with running back Isaac Guerendo (hamstring/foot) and safety Ji'Ayir Brown (ankle) set to be limited.
