Kyle Shanahan must try to fix glaring issue for 49ers offense that isn’t actually even their fault
The depth has been plagued by injuries.
The offense for the San Francisco 49ers is taking punches constantly so far this offseason. As they maneuver through camp practices and the preseason, injuries have riddled the unit for Kyle Shanahan. It’s an unlucky break for the coaching staff, and they’ll need plenty of guys to step up to find success.
Injuries to the WR room for 49ers
This is a laundry list to cover for San Francisco. Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from his ACL injury. Kyle Shanahan recently confirmed that they don’t expect him back until at least Week 6. Jauan Jennings was expected to step into a massive role, but he is looking for a new contract and also dealing with a calf injury.
DeMarcus Robinson is a trusted vet, but the team expects that he will be suspended to start the season, via Shanahan. That has not been confirmed, nor has the total amount of games for his suspension, but three games to start the year is on the table. Russell Gage, another experienced wideout, is also dealing with an MCL injury.
Rookie Jordan Watkins flashed some in training camp, but he is nursing a high-ankle sprain. Jacob Cowing recently re-aggravated a previous hamstring injury. He could miss regular season time, too. This group of injuries at wideout is before the team even plays a football game that counts this season.
Veteran playmakers and key rookie may carry the load
Players like Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, and Ricky Pearsall may have to shoulder a massive amount of target share for the passing game to start the season. The team and coaching staff have been pleased with the development of Pearsall, but asking him to be arguably the most targeted wide receiver on the roster probably wasn’t in their plans to begin the offseason. Regardless, they’ll need him to perform if they want to find consistency in the passing game.
The 49ers also added WR Skyy Moore to the fold this week, a former Chiefs wideout who never got his NFL career going in KC. He will look to use his speed in Shanahan’s offense to create big plays and spark some energy.
We could see San Fran attempt to trade for another pass catcher, but they just made another move on offense. They dealt a sixth-round pick to the Washington Commanders to acquire RB Brian Robinson Jr. – as their RB room has dealt with a multitude of injuries, too.
