Few things have been monitored as closely as Brock Purdy's recovery from elbow surgery during training camp.

But if anybody was in any doubt over Purdy's readiness to play Week 1 against the Steelers, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan removed it on Monday.

On an appearance on NFL Network's 'Inside Training Camp Live', Shanahan was emphatic in stating Purdy would be ready to play now.

Asked by former 49ers coach Steve Mariucci if Purdy is going to be ready to go, Shanahan replied:

"He’s going to be ready. He’s ready now. No limitations in practice, we give him an extra off day. I think that ends some time next week. We’ve had a program which we planned on since June and that should be over pretty soon."

Shanahan's comments indicate the 49ers will continue to be cautious with Purdy for now, giving him an extra day's rest in a week where San Francisco will take part in joint practices with the Raiders.

As the 49ers' clear QB1, Purdy will also get the benefit of resting when the Niners face the Raiders in their first preseason game at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, with Shanahan making it clear few of San Francisco's starters will feature in the exhibition.

He added:

"Usually when we go scrimmage with the team we’re much more into the scrimmage than the game. We’ll see how the two practices go, but going off our history we try to play our starters as much as we can in practices and then keep them out of the game."

With Purdy set to watch from the sideline, the focus against the Raiders will be on the battle between Trey Lance and Sam Darnold to be Purdy's immediate backup. The identity of the quarterback first on the field in Las Vegas this weekend may give a significant clue as to which way that competition is going.
