The San Francisco 49ers' focus will soon to turn to the 2025 season, one in which they hope Brandon Aiyuk will play a significant part.
Aiyuk saw his 2024 campaign come to an end when he suffered a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus damage in the Niners' Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
That brought to a close a frustrating season for the All-Pro wide receiver, who signed a four-year, $120 million extension with the 49ers before the season following protracted negotiations with San Francisco.
The severe nature of his injury means there is no guarantee of Aiyuk being ready for 2025, but head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a somewhat encouraging update about the progress of his recovery on Saturday.
"He's plugging along with that, the rehab guys I don't see too much of," Shanahan said. "They come in early in the morning and they're usually out of here before we get off the practice field.
"He went to LA for his surgery, did the rehab there for a while but he's been back here the last month or so, going through his process, working hard.
"It's a long process, but he's on track."
Though Aiyuk had struggled to make the kind of impact he had in 2023, his absence has been glaring throughout a trying season for San Francisco, with an injury-hit offense unable to hit the heights of last year without a wideout who possesses the innate ability to separate at all three levels.
Shanahan's words suggest that, right now, Brock Purdy's favorite target is on schedule to reprise that role at the start of the 2025 campaign. However, a lot can happen between now and then, and it would be no surprise if the 49ers brought in further insurance to protect against the possibility of Aiyuk not being healthy for the start of next season.
