Matchups between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks are already pretty spicy.
But in 2025, they will have a little extra meaning for 49ers offensive assistant Klay Kubiak.
The Seattle Seahawks are reportedly set to hire Klint Kubiak as their new offensive coordinator, replacing Ryan Grubb, who was relieved of his duties after just one season in the role. Kubiak served as the New Orleans Saints' offensive coordinator in 2024 but was the 49ers' passing game specialist in2023.
That means the 49ers'.two games with the Seahawks in 2025 will pit siblings against each other.
Unlike his brother in Seattle, Klay Kubiak will not call plays, but he is set to be promoted to offensive coordinator for San Francisco by Kyle Shanahan.
He called plays for the 49ers in some preseason games and in this season's Week 18 finale against the Arizona Cardinals.
Asked about Klay Kubiak's performance in 2024, Shanahan told an end-of-season press conference:
“I thought he did an awesome job and Klay’s role is going to be the same as it’s been which has been the offensive coordinator. He just hasn’t had that title yet. I mean, Klay has done as much as anyone on offense for these last two years. So, this was his second year doing that and he gets better and better each year at it. He just hasn’t had the official title yet. And now he’ll get the official title, which he more than deserves, but it’s more about recognizing what he’s already been doing and doing at a high level.”
Klay Kubiak cannot be formally confirmed without the 49ers satisfying league rules regarding their search for a coordinator. Still, regardless of that formality, brotherly bragging rights will be on the line in the 2025 edition of a rivalry in which the stakes are always high.
Though they will be occupying slightly different roles, with Klint Kubiak calling plays for Seattle, the motivation to beat his brother will still be very high on Klay Kubiak's side. After posting a 1-5 divisional record in 2024, it's imperative the 49ers find a way to ensure he is on top in 2025.
Daniel Jeremiah has 49ers doing something they’ve never done under Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch in first 2025 mock draft
It would shore up a key area of the team.
