With Brock Purdy sidelined, it’s up to Mac Jones to lead the San Francisco 49ers, and on Sunday, he helped the team defeat the New York Giants, 34–24. While his play during the game was impressive, it was his gesture right at the end that had everyone talking.

The 49ers were in victory formation with little time remaining on the clock, but instead of Jones staying in to finish the game, he decided to give his teammate the opportunity. Specifically, it was backup quarterback Adrian Martinez who took the final knee, marking his first snap in the NFL.

And when speaking with reporters after the game, Jones revealed that it was actually his idea to have Martinez come into the game. The coaching staff had nothing to do with it.

“Yeah, Kyle [Shanahan] already took his headset off and I’m like, ‘C’mon! C’mon Adrian!’,” Jones told reporters. “So I just subbed myself out, snuck to the sideline. But I was happy, I think Adrian was gonna go in either way. They wanted him to get in there. . . Once we were taking a knee, I definitely wanted Adrian to be there.”

Mac Jones also took a moment to praise Martinez

“He’s been awesome, to be honest,” Jones said of Martinez. “He’s a good friend of mine, just gotten to know him. He’s been a great voice in that room along with Brock and [Kurtis] Rourke as well.”

Martinez went undrafted and joined the league in 2023 with the Detroit Lions, having spent the summer with them before being cut in August. He then had a stint with the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League (UFL) and was even named league MVP in 2024. He was then signed by the New York Jets in July 2024, but was waived in August and re-signed to the practice squad. He spent the 2024 season with the Jets, but was waived in August, just before the start of the 2025 season.

That’s where the 49ers come in, as they signed him to the practice squad shortly after. He was then promoted to the active roster due to Purdy’s injury.

Mac Jones left it all out there on Sunday

During the first half of the 49ers’ win, Jones was sack sacked by Giants’ Rakeem Nunez-Roches, and when he stood up, the broadcast showed that the quarterback was bleeding. In the replay, it was clear Jones took a shot to the face that resulted in his bloody nose.

However, Jones didn’t even come out of the game, staying on the field.
