The San Francisco 49ers' focus is right now entirely on their Week 13 matchup with the Buffalo Bills. However, there has already been a major change concerning their Week 14 game with the Chicago Bears.
Friday saw the Bears fire head coach Matt Eberflus following Chicago's Thanksgiving defeat to the Detroit Lions.
That loss dropped the Bears to 4-8 on the season, and came in bemusing fashion as dreadful clock management saw them fail to take a shot at a game-tying field goal after Caleb Williams was sacked on second down with 36 seconds left.
Eberflus came in for heavy criticism for the Bears' bizarre decision not to call timeout after that play, Williams forced into a desperation heave on third down, and his departure means it will now be offensive coordinator Thomas Brown running the show as interim coach for Chicago's trip to Levi's Stadium.
San Francisco, despite a hugely disappointing season, will likely be favored against the Bears, but the removal of Eberflus adds another dimension to the game, in which Chicago will hope to benefit from the 'interim coach bounce'.
The onus will be on the 49ers to prove the idea of such a bounce to be a fallacy by taking care of business against a team they will be expected to beat.
But taking care of business has been a significant problem for the 49ers this season. If they can't do so next week against the Bears, then their already dwindling playoff hopes will be all but gone.
