The San Francisco 49ers just added another defensive player to the list of free-agent acquisitions.

San Francisco is bringing in Myles Hartsfield, a safety, who last played for the Panthers, according to recent reports.

At 25 years old, Hartsfield started 19 games for the Panthers in the past two seasons. Under Steve Wilks in 2022, he started 10 games. And as Wilks joined the 49ers coaching staff, it appears that the 49ers brought a familiar face with him.

Safety is now no longer a real position of concern for the 49ers. The 49ers have four safeties with starting experience: Talanoa Hufanga, Tashaun Gipson, George Odum, and Hartsfield.

Additionally, the 49ers still could draft a safety in the upcoming draft. But typical NFL rosters carry four safeties so Hartsfield may have to compete to make the 53-man roster.

The 49ers have three compensatory draft picks at the end of Round 3 — pick Nos. 99, 101, and 102. Instead of drafting a safety with one of those picks, look for the 49ers to take an edge rusher or an offensive tackle, or maybe even a tight end. The 49ers still have other needs.
