There were a host of strong performances for San Francisco on Sunday as the Niners claimed a 16-10 win over the New Orleans Saints, with several of those in the mix for one of the final places on the roster boosting their cases.
Here's my latest prediction for the 53-man roster following the Niners' second exhibition game.
Note: Players with single asterisk (*) are 2024 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) are 2024 undrafted free agents.
Quarterback (3)
IN: Brock Purdy, Joshua Dobbs, Brandon Allen
OUT: Tanner Mordecai**
The Skinny: Dobbs looks to have taken the lead for QB2 after an exhilarating showing against the Saints. All in all, the 49ers can afford to be very happy with their quarterback depth chart.
Running back (5)
IN: Christian McCaffrey, Kyle Juszczyk, Jordan Mason, Isaac Guerendo*, Cody Schrader**
OUT: Elijah Mitchell, Patrick Taylor, Matt Breida, Ke'Shawn Vaughn
The skinny: Mason resting for the second preseason game was partially to do with injury, but it also reflected his status as the favorite to be the second running back. Schrader not playing the second half was a good sign for him making the 53.
Wide receiver (6)
IN: Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall*, Jacob Cowing*, Chris Conley
OUT: Ronnie Bell, Danny Gray, Tay Martin, Trent Taylor, Robbie Chosen, Jontre Kirklin
The skinny: Cowing's impressive debut will be very encouraging to the 49ers, while the likes of Bell and Taylor only gave San Francisco more reason not to have them on the 53 for 2024.
Tight end (3)
IN: George Kittle, Eric Saubert, Brayden Willis
OUT: Cameron Latu, Jake Tonges, Mason Pline**
The skinny: It's difficult to look at this group and believe the 49ers are in a better position to get George Kittle rest in 2024. There's no sign it's all going to click for former third-rounder Latu. Expect the 49ers to cut their losses with the Alabama product.
Offensive line (10)
IN: Trent Williams (LT), Aaron Banks (LG), Jake Brendel (C), Dominick Puni* (RG), Colton McKivitz (RT), Jon Feliciano, Chris Hubbard, Ben Bartch, Jarrett Kingston*, Jaylon Moore
OUT: Spencer Burford, Sebastian Gutierrez, Isaac Alarcon, Lewis Kidd, Nick Zakelj, Brandon Parker, Drake Nugent**
The skinny: Kingston is making it very difficult to justify cutting him. The sixth-round rookie shining at both left and right guard against the Saints after a strong debut versus the Tennessee Titans. Had the 49ers not expressed significant confidence in Moore, he could be considered on the hotseat after giving up three pressures on Sunday. In reality, the biggest non-Trent Williams holdout questions up front concern the battle between Bartch and Zakelj among the guard-center backups, the identity of the second backup tackle (Hubbard or Parker) and whether the 49ers can risk trying to sneak Kingston onto the practice squad.
Defensive line (8)
IN: Nick Bosa (DE), Javon Hargrave, (DT), Maliek Collins (DT), Leonard Floyd (DE), Yetur Gross-Matos, Kevin Givens, Jordan Elliott, Robert Beal Jr.
OUT: Drake Jackson (IR), Kalia Davis (IR RETURN), T.Y. McGill, Alex Barrett, Nick Williams, Jonathan Garvin, Shakel Brown, Sam Okuayinonu, Evan Anderson**
The Skinny: After a much more encouraging display from the backup pass rushers against New Orleans, it will be interesting to see if Barrett or Garvin, who each played well, could make a late push for the roster. If not, one or both could end up on the practice squad.
Linebacker (5)
IN: Fred Warner (MIKE), De'Vondre Campbell (WILL), Dee Winters (SAM), Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Tatum Bethune*
OUT: Curtis Robinson, Jalen Graham, Dre Greenlaw (PUP)
The skinny: Both Curtis Robinson and Jalen Graham made strong pitches for a roster spot by catching the eye against New Orleans. Despite their efforts, the 49ers will likely feel confident they can slip both onto the practice squad.
Cornerback (6)
IN: Charvarius Ward, Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green*, Isaac Yiadom, Rock Ya-Sin, Darrell Luter Jr.
OUT: Chase Lucas, Ambry Thomas (IR RETURN), Samuel Womack III, Kemon Hall
The skinny: Six linebackers or six cornerbacks? Luter made a compelling case for the latter with the pass coverage he produced to ice the game with New Orleans. He has plenty of supporters inside the building, and is a much better spot to make the team after his late star turn.
Safety (4)
IN: Ji'Ayir Brown, Talanoa Hufanga, Malik Mustapha*, George Odum
OUT: Tayler Hawkins, Tracy Walker, Jaylen Mahoney**
The skinny: Hufanga was cleared this week to resume some football activities, further solidifying a very settled group. It remains to be seen if he'll start Week 1 next to Brown, but the form of Odum and Mustapha in training camp and preseason will give the 49ers belief they have the depth to get top-tier play from their safeties even if the 2022 All-Pro isn't ready for the season opener.
Specialists (3)
IN: Jake Moody (K), Mitch Wishnowsky (P), Taylor Pepper (LS)
OUT: Pressley Harvin III
The skinny: Harvin was outstanding against the Saints, with four punts downed inside the 20. He'll be the 49ers' top option to call if Wishnowsky deals with another injury.
The Final Word
Not too many changes from the last projection after the Titans game. The main issues for the 49ers to resolve concern the depth options at running back, the logjam at linebacker and the battle among the backups on the offensive line.
With the starters almost certain to get a lot more run in the preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders, opportunities for those near the bottom of the roster to impress might be more limited than in recent weeks. Head coach Kyle Shanahan may have a good idea of the makeup of his initial 53. Though snaps could be harder to come by in Las Vegas, there's still time for his mind to be changed.
Brock Purdy makes his expectations for the San Francisco 49ers’ injury-hit offense abundantly clear
He doesn’t have much concern.
