The San Francisco 49ers took to the practice field again on Tuesday once more without Brandon Aiyuk and without Trent Williams.

Aiyuk's contract saga has dominated the offseason for the 49ers but the absence of Williams from training camp is arguably even more of an issue for San Francisco as the Niners tune up for another run at the Super Bowl title.

The All-Pro left tackle elevates an offensive line that outside of him is widely regardless as a weakness of the San Francisco roster. That weakness has shown up during training camp so far, with the defensive line largely dictating matters in practice to this point.

With the introduction of pads to practice, the playing field has been leveled somewhat, with the offense enjoying a very strong first team period on Tuesday, which included two 60-yard touchdowns from Brock Purdy to Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey respectively.

However, the second team period ended in ugly fashion, with Purdy throwing four interceptions in his final five picks amid severe pressure from the likes of Javon Hargrave and Leonard Floyd.

In short, for the 49ers to get their offense in rhythm as early as possible, they could really use Williams back in the first-team lineup.

They would also hugely benefit from having Aiyuk, who boasts an outstanding rapport with Purdy, on the field. There's also a compelling case to be made that Aiyuk needs the practice reps to avoid the kind of underwhelming — at least by his standards — season Nick Bosa endured last campaign following his lengthy contract impasse with the team.

The difference between Aiyuk and Williams is that, as the latter sits out camp in search of a reworked deal that will give him guaranteed money that is missing from the remaining years of his contract, the consensus best tackle in football is not expected to be impacted at all by his absence from practice.

Left guard Aaron Banks said it best about the man who lines up to his outside shoulder when asked about Williams' holdout on Monday.

"Trent's a guy that when he shows up he's going to be Trent Williams," Banks said. "When he shows up he'll be ready, I'm not worried about that."

The 49ers probably aren't worried either, but they do have reason to be concerned about the impact Williams' holdout is having on their offensive work in camp.

Williams might need to knock the rust off a little bit but, as Banks succinctly articulated, he doesn't really need to practice that much. The 49ers, though, absolutely need Williams on the practice field. It would behoove them to resolve this issue sooner rather than later.
