Jake Moody hasn't exactly enjoyed a convincing preseason, and he will miss a chance to improve his reputation on Friday after being ruled out of the 49ers' preseason finale.
Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers kicker strained his right quad in practice and will not play. He is considered day to day.
It is a setback for a player whose selection with the 99th overall pick in this year's draft has divided opinion.
The 49ers selected Moody largely because of the power in his leg that theoretically makes long-distance kicks a higher percentage bet.
Moody has made 60-yard kicks with room to spare in practice during camp, but his preseason performances have been marked by struggles.
The former Michigan man missed from 40 and 58 against the Raiders. He then missed an extra point against the Broncos. Though he converted three field goals in the victory over Denver, none were convincing, with Moody squeaking his game-winner inside the right upright.
Now he will watch from the sideline as Zane Gonzalez takes over the kicking duties against the Chargers. The 49ers will hope the injury does not linger and complicates matters as they put their 53-man roster together next week ahead of the regular-season opener with the Steelers on Sept. 10.
