The Seahawks defense was the part of the team that prevented Seattle from truly contending to go deep into the postseason in 2022, but Coby Bryant expects a more aggressive unit to be much improved this season.
Bryant was one of the bright spots for the Seahawks on defense last season, producing some extremely encouraging performances to suggest he can be Seattle's long-term starting nickel.
Despite the impressive rookie showings of Bryant and fellow corner Tariq Woolen, the Seahawks still finished a disappointing 21st in Football Outsiders DVOA on defense.
Bryant, though, has no doubt that ranking will improve in 2023.
He told 'Bump & Stacy' on Seattle Sports:
“I can tell you we’re always going to be more aggressive, and that’s our style of play. Just statistically, we’re definitely gonna be better. That’s always a goal, especially for a head coach, defensive coordinator, even the position coaches, as well, is to become better than what you were the year before.”
Bryant's confidence comes from the film room, with last year's fourth-round pick believing the work the secondary has done studying tape has them set up for success in the coming campaign.
When asked we he feels the defense will make progress, he added:
“Just watching film from last year and just learning what we could do better versus what we did. And it’s like I keep saying, growing and learning. We (in the secondary) take care of what we’re supposed to take care of, and then have the big guys (up front on defense) take care of what they’re supposed to take care of, just being together as one, that’s the biggest thing.”
An aggressive approach from Seattle is probably the right one. The Seahawks' defense was far too accommodating to opposing offenses last season.
Indeed, Seattle allowed 70 plays of 20 yards or more, a tally only topped by three teams. Worryingly, 17 of them came on the ground, the fifth-most in the NFL, pointing to a fallibility up front when it comes to keeping the ground game in check.
Bryant obviously plays some part in that, but the challenge for him and his teammates in the defensive backfield will be to prove their positive showings last year do not prove a flash in the pan.
If the Seahawks are to have a hope of challenging a well-rounded 49ers roster for the division title, they have to be more stingy on defense. Bryant believes they will be and, for the Seahawks to live up to what are likely to be greatly increased expectations, the Seattle defense must ensure he is not soon eating his words
