DK Metcalf is one of the most frightening deep threats in the NFL.
In case you weren't already aware of that status, he delivered a reminder of his prowess in that area during the Seahawks' training camp practice on Thursday.
With his blend of speed, size and underrated route-running ability, Metcalf is a nightmare to cover one on one downfield.
Mike Jackson, who has impressed in camp this year for Seattle, learned that the heard way.
One of the highlights of a padless session for Seattle was a go ball from Geno Smith to Metcalf, who quickly got the better of Jackson with his release and gained a huge amount of separation from the corner.
Smith had no problem hitting Metcalf for a touchdown on a showcase of a connection the Seahawks will be more prolific in 2023.
Metcalf found the endzone six times in 2022 having scored 22 receiving touchdowns over the previous two campaigns. On targets of 15 air yards or more, he averaged 0.35 Expected Points Added per target, 18th among receivers with at least 25 such targets, per Sports Info Solutions.
There is clear room for him to improve on last season's downfield numbers, especially in an offense that now features Jaxon Smith-Njigba working from the slot to divert attention away from Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.
With the skill set to consistently produce plays akin to his dusting of Jackson, there is no reason why Metcalf cannot enjoy a big bump in production on deep balls in 2023.
