It's been a long road for Jamal Adams since he suffered a torn quad in Week 1 last season, but the Seahawks safety is poised to take a huge step towards finally returning to the field.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll confirmed on Tuesday that Adams is set come off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list this week.

"There's a chance we'll have him back out here tomorrow," Carroll said. "So that's a big step for him to go forward, but it isn't a step that means he's going to be back out practicing yet. We want to get him in the flow, again, looking at the weeks we have to build up and the preparation time. He's ready to do that, and I brought it up to him and he responded really well, so I think probably tomorrow or the next we'll get that done."

Seattle does not need to rush Adams back. The Seahawks have several options at safety, having signed Julian Love to potentially pair with three-time Pro Bowler Quandre Diggs. They have also played nickel corner Coby Bryant at safety in preseason while Jonathan Sutherland has caught the eye with his performances in that role.

The advantage of Adams return is not what he offers as a traditional safety, but what he brings the Seahawks as an extra blitzer and box defender.

In 2020, Adams had 9.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss and 14 quarterback hits. Though he is unlikely to ever justify his price of two first-round picks and a third that the Seahawks paid to acquire him from the Jets in 2020, Adams' prowess attacking downhill and making plays in the backfield can add a destructive dimension to a Seattle defense hoping to take advantage of the versatility it has in the secondary and make a substantial leap in 2023.

The Seahawks don't need Adams back right away, but his return could have underrated importance if Seattle is competing to win the NFC this season.
