Seahawks brass likely won’t be so quick to make a move that other teams find themselves doing immediately after a trade

The Seattle Seahawks front office likely won’t extend Rashid Shaheed right away.

The Seattle Seahawks were a bit active before the 2026 NFL trade deadline. They traded for former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, one of the fastest players in the league, and sent a 2026 fourth and fifth-round pick to the Saints. Many fans wanted the other Saints receiver, Chris Olave, but due to the concussion history, this option will fare well, too.

Shaheed was an All-Pro in 2023 and even has some punt and kick return history to help the Seahawks on special teams. The biggest question now seems to be whether they will extend him right away or not, considering he is on an expiring contract. Based on what we know, they won’t be doing that.

Why the Seahawks will wait till the end of the season to extend Shaheed

Shaheed being on an expiring contract means that he will either re-sign with the Seahawks this season or he will hit free agency and test his value, allowing him to choose whichever team he wants to join.

The Seahawks don’t always operate like other teams, which will re-sign or extend a player early into their tenure. They do not jump the gun on these types of things, which is smart. Sure, the player may want to see the new money he was looking for at his old team, but Seattle is a patient organization in those situations, and it’s really worked out for it.

We have examples like Leonard Williams — maybe the best defensive tackle in the league right now — who have waited and signed their extension after a trade. Williams is a centerpiece of an elite defense and a big reason the Seahawks are as successful as they are right now. That move was made with patience, when it would have been easy to give him the money he wanted right away, because they’ve already seen what he did with the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

Ernest Jones is another example of the same situation, having previously played with the Los Angeles Rams and the Tennessee Titans. He played well for those teams, but Seattle stuck to its guns and made it work. He is also a big part of this great defense, despite being injured right now.

So, perhaps we see them wait because that’s essentially what history tells us the team will do. Or, maybe they do extend him right away. Who knows what they do, but we do know it was a pretty good trade.
