Following their elimination from playoff contention in the final week of the regular season, there was some speculation over the future of Pete Carroll as Seattle Seahawks head coach.
That speculation has now been put to bed.
Carroll confirmed on Monday that he plans to return to coach the Seahawks in 2024.
He told Seattle Sports: "I plan to be coaching his team. And I told you, I love these guys. And that’s what I would like to be doing and see how far you can go."
Carroll's contract runs through the 2024 season and has an option year taking him through the 2025 campaign, according to NFL Network. At 72, he is the oldest coach in the NFL, but that is seemingly irrelevant to Carroll.
"I’m not worn out. I’m not tired. I’m not any of that stuff," he added. "I need to do a better job and I need to help my coaches more and we need to do a better job of coaching. There’s a lot of area for improvement."
The Seahawks finished 9-8 for the second straight season but missed the playoffs as they failed to close the gap to the San Francisco 49ers at the top of the NFC West. Seattle was swept by both the division champion Niners and the Los Angeles Rams, who made the playoffs at 10-7.
Carroll is ready to turn the page to the task of bridging that divide with offseason decisions he hopes will help ensure his age-73 season is not one in which the Seahawks do not make the desired progress.
"This is when the real business starts to take place," said Carroll. "So there's things that have to be done and decisions have to be made and choices and all kinds of stuff. That’s what this time of the year is. And we’ll see how we go."
