Fresh off a UFL Championship, Birmingham Stallions running back Ricky Person Jr. has landed another NFL opportunity ahead of training camp.
According to Aaron Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks will be signing Person to a contract after the standout running back received multiple offers from other NFL teams.
Person will add some much needed competition to the Seahawks backfield once the team returns to practice on July 23rd.
During the spring season with the Stallions, Person led the entire league with six rushing touchdowns and finished the season with 295 yards on the ground. In the Stallions' UFL Championship win against the San Antonio Brahmas, Person rushed for 102 yards and caught one pass for four yards.
Person's training camp opportunity with the Seahawks will be his second stint in the NFL after joining the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2022. The former NC State standout was later waived by the Ravens and never appeared in an NFL game.
Person will have a chance to finally stick in the NFL after showing out in the UFL with the Seahawks based on the team's current depth at the position. While Seattle currently has two established backs in Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet, the team has dealt with their fair-share of running back injuries in the past and know how critical it is to have strong depth at the position on the roster.
Prior to signing Person, the Seahawks backfield outside of Walker and Charbonnet consisted of Kenny McIntosh, Kobe Lewis, George Holani, and TaMerik Williams. None of those players have toted the rock in the NFL, with three of them being rookies.
Person also has an underrated part of his game that he was able to show during this season in the UFL that will fit well in new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb's scheme. Out of the backfield, Person caught 13 passes for 150 yards, an average of 11.5 yards per reception. A few weeks back, Grubb explained how important that skillset is.
“Oh, I love doing that,” Grubb said back during OTAs. “I love doing that. Yeah, we want to make every guy on the field, all five (eligible pass-catchers), as dangerous as possible from any position on the field.”
Person will get his chance to prove himself to Grubb and the rest of the Seahawks coaching staff next month and potentially during the preseason to keep his dreams alive of making an NFL roster after his successful season in the UFL.
