Seahawks' decision to sign former Cowboys pass rusher Demarcus Lawerence met with criticism

"It was getting pretty tough to pin down the Seahawks "worst" decision, because they really hadn't made one until the Lawrence signing. $14 million per year with $18 million guaranteed is simply too much for a guy who turns 33 in a couple of months and is coming off a season-ending injury that limited him to four games in 2024. Throw in the fact his sack numbers have declined each of the past three seasons and well, it's easy to see why this is at the bottom of the Seahawks' free agency totem pole."

A to Z Sports' NFC Worst Free Agency Moves

Offense has been the major focus for the Seahawks, with the team trading away Geno Smith and DK Metcalf and replacing them with Sam Darnold and Cooper Kupp. Their biggest move on the defensive side of the ball, though, is without question the signing of former Dallas Cowboys edge rusher DeMarcus Lawerence.

Lawrence is entering his 12th year in the NFL, and this upcoming year will be his first season not playing for the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Cowboys. His best seasons in the NFL came in 2017 and 2018, where he put up back-to-back years of over 10 sacks. Those are the only two seasons he's accomplished that feat in his career. Since then, he's only surpassed six sacks twice, in 2020 and 2022 (6.5 & 6). So $14 million a year certainly seems steep for a soon to be 33 year old edge rusher who is clearly on the decline.

I wouldn't rule it as the worst move of their offseason, though. For me, that would be replacing DK Metcalf with Cooper Kupp. When people hear the name Cooper Kupp, they will always think of his incredible 2021 season, but he isn't anywhere close to that level of player anymore. On top of struggling with injuries has been one of the worst separators in the NFL in recent years. In my opinion, the drop-off from Metcalf to Kupp simply isn't being talked about enough.
