When the news was first announced, the Seattle Seahawks moving on from head coach Pete Carroll was the biggest NFL news of the past few weeks.
Even though it has been buried by other high-profile coaches retiring or moving on from their own long-tenured positions, the Carroll news is still worth keeping a close eye on, especially the part that could see Carroll serve as an advisor to the team that just removed him from the head coaching role.
As nice as it would be to keep Carroll in the building, a clean break seems like it might be the better plan.
It makes sense that the Seahawks would waffle on a decision like this. Carroll is the best coach in franchise history and still has the team playing well despite plenty of forces working against it.
Seattle came down to the wire in the playoff race, and Carroll still seemed like he wanted to be here for a bit longer in his current role.
Still, the team did know that a move had to be made. Coaches like Carroll in the modern NFL game are starting to become less and less tactically sound in a league that prioritizes offense and throwing the ball more than anything.
The Seahawks were smart to think that the right offensive mind would make a positive change in Seattle. The issue comes from keeping Carroll in the building.
As nice as it is to offer that chance to such an important member of the organization, this creates a pretty massive shadow for whichever coach takes the reins of the franchise. It would take a massive personality to compete with the likes of Carroll and the weight he brings to any role related to the team.
Instead of creating an environment where the new head coach is able to build the team to his own vision, free of the old regime, there could be an added pressure coming from within the building to maintain the Carroll status quo.
That is not a recipe for success.
The Seahawks made a decision to move on from the future Hall of Fame coach. Now, they have to lean into it and create an environment for their new head coach to come in and be successful in his own way.
Seahawks’ shocking Pete Carroll decision marks end of an era
It’s come as a huge surprise.
