Jaxon Smith-Njigba gave the Seahawks another exciting showcase of his talent in Saturday's preseason game, but an injury he suffered on a highlight reel play may mean it is some time before they see him to deliver another.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that wide receiver Smith-Njigba, the 20th overall pick by Seattle in this year's draft, is set to undergo wrist surgery in Philadelphia.
Smith-Njigba broke a bone in his wrist when he was brought down at the one-yard line during the Seahawks' preseason clash with the Cowboys following a 48-yard catch and run.
Despite the injury, there is a chance Smith-Njigba could be ready for the start of the regular season. According to Schefter, the surgery will determine how much time he will spend on the sidelines.
Smith-Njigba missing any of the regular season would be a major blow to a Seahawks offense that looks ready to take another step in part because of the threat the former Ohio State star gives them from the slot.

But durability was a knock on Smith-Njigba going into the 2023 draft. He played only three games in his final college season because of a hamstring injury.
In this instance, Smith-Njigba looks to have been the victim of some very bad luck at the end of a play on which he demonstrated exactly why the Seahawks put any concerns about his lack of playing time in 2022 aside to take him in the top 20.
His injury means both of the Seahawks' first-round picks are on the shelf, as fifth overall pick Devon Witherspoon remains out with a hamstring injury.
Now the Seahawks will have their fingers crossed that his recovery timeline does not prevent him from hitting the ground in the regular season after a pair of highly encouraging preseason performances.
