Seahawks' sneaky free agent signing will have an impact in 2023
The Seahawks’ latest addition will end up as a part of one of the most important position groups.
The Seattle Seahawks have a lot of pieces in place for another playoff run in 2023, but there are other areas that really need additions/improvements in order for the team to keep winning at a high level.
The interior offensive line is one of those areas in need of improvement. Fortunately, the Seahawks made a sneaky addition on Thursday that should really pay off as the season progresses: former Detroit Lions offensive lineman Evan Brown.
Brown is a former undrafted free agent that found himself thrust into a starting role when starting center Frank Ragnow went down for the year in early 2021. He started the remaining 12 games and started 12 more games at guard in 2022.
He's a very underrated player that has started to find his groove over the last couple of seasons. And, as earlier noted, Brown is a versatile player that can play guard or center. That's a big help for the Seahawks, because they need help at one of the guard positions and the center position.
Brown is naturally better at center when looking at both tape and numbers. The Seahawks also have a hole at the center position on the roster. Brown immediately fills the position and could potentially keep the team from spending a Day 2 pick on the position. Free agency is obviously still in play, too.
But, if there is a true center prospect in FA or the draft and the Seahawks like said prospect, Brown can slide over to guard and still provide serviceable play.
Either way, Brown is bound to have a role in 2023. And the best part is he's still extremely young at 26-years-old. The Seahawks signed him to a one-year deal, but, he can easily be a part of the foreseeable future if he continues to grow and develop like he did in Detroit.
