The Seattle Seahawks have been a decent team over the past few years, but one of the worst defenses in the NFL during that time held the team back as a whole.
The Legion of Boom was finished, and the Seahawks shifted in more of an offensive direction, as did the rest of the NFL.
While the Seahawks may still be defined at the end of the year by their offense, having one of the best defenses in the league is hardly anything to scoff at.
Don't look now, but the Seahawks just put together one of the best October stretches on defense of any team in the league. Holding their opponents to just 12.5 points per game was a huge reason why Seattle was able to amas a 3-1 record and earn the top spot in the NFC West.
While Seattle's offense did start to take more shape as a pass-first unit with three excellent wide receiver options, the defense will still be the biggest story.
All Seattle needed was for this side of the ball to reach the middle of the pack. Instead of settling at this point, the Seahawks blew past the middle of the pack and have established themselves as one of the top-ten defenses in the league.
Between the big hits, blanket coverage, consistent pass rush, and the ability to stop the run, this is the best defense Seattle has fielded since the Legion of Boom, and that is no small comparison.
Perhaps it has more to do with how bad the defenses have been for the Seahawks in recent years, but it is still fair to say this defense should be good enough when paired with the offense for Seattle to compete for the NFC title, and that is extremely impressive considering how fast this turnaround has occurred.
Seahawks achieve new status with recent results
What a time to be a fan of the Seahawks.
