K.J. Wright on the Russell Wilson trade: 'Biggest trade heist in history'
Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker believes what the Seahawks traded to get rid of Russell Wilson amounts to a daytime theft.
When the Seattle Seahawks traded their former franchise quarterback Russell Wilson, many believed the franchise made out with the worse end of the deal.
And then Wilson flopped in Denver, looking every bit older and less dynamic than his time in Seattle.
K.J. Wright, a former linebacker for the Seahawks, went on NFL Network to explain that the trade that dealt Wilson to the Broncos wasn't just a winning deal for the Seahawks. It was a heist.
"When I look at this Russell Wilson situation, this could potentially go down as the biggest trade heist in NFL history,'' Wright tells NFL Network. "We're talking two first-round picks, we're talking two second-round picks, we're talking a bunch of good football players Noah Fant, Shelby Harris, Drew Lock.
"We're talking about they gave this man five years, and paid him a lot of money to say you are our guy for the next five years,'' Wright continued. "Russell Wilson, we're putting all of our eggs into (your basket) and all they've gotten so far is five wins, and a fired head coach.''
Wilson played with Wright for a near-decade. The two won a Super Bowl together. But that didn't stop Wright from calling out the Wilson trade as one the Seahawks clearly received the better part of.
Is it a heist? Maybe.
Wilson is locked in a quarterback battle in Denver, and the Broncos looked awful for most of the 2022 NFL season. Meanwhile, Seattle overperformed and made the playoffs, to the surprise of many.
The Wilson draft haul also landed the Seahawks an additional first-round pick, which will only help the franchise's re-tooling efforts.
Put plainly, the Seahawks getting rid of Wilson at the time the franchise did, was the best decision the team could have made. Stating it as a heist, however, feels like a stretch even the most ardent Seahawks truthers shouldn't admit.
"So right now this is looking very scary (for Denver), this is looking ugly, and the Seahawks they really hit on their draft picks,'' Wright said while adding that the trade is making the Seahawks front office look like a collection of "geniuses."
