The Seattle Seahawks officially start mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, but it's going to be without two players in rookie UDFA wideout C.J. Johnson and defensive lineman Forrest Merrill.
Per KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, the Seahawks waived both players on Monday. The team also signed rookie defensive lineman Jacob Sykes.
Sykes is an undrafted free agent, himself, who last played for the UCLA Bruins. Before that, he played at Harvard where he earned First-Team All-Ivy League honors in 2021 after leading the team with 7.0 sacks.
He'll compete with rookies Cameron Young, Mike Morris, Jonah Tavai, M.J. Anderson, and other players like Mario Edwards Jr., Myles Adams, and Austin Faoliu for playing time behind the starting trio of Jarran Reed, Dre'Mont Jones, and Byron Mone once he's healthy.
“It's been a little bit up and down for him," head coach Pete Carroll said Thursday when asked about Mone's recovery from January knee surgery. "It hasn't been quite as forward moving as some of the recoveries. He's a huge guy, 360 pounds. It's harder on him than it is on the other guys. He's working really hard. He's been here the whole time. He's dedicating himself to it. We're hoping he'll make a back. We're counting on him.”
