While football is a team sport, the NFL is ruled by a handful of positions. Quarterbacks, offensive tackles, corners, and pass rushers have dominated the "cornerstone position category" for the better part of the past decade.

In recent years, a new position has joined that group. Wide receiver has jumped up in its value in a pass-heavy NFL that often protects offensive players more than defenders.

The Seattle Seahawks should be more than happy to know this in light of the fact that they could make a legitimate claim to the best wide receiver room in the NFL come the end of the season.

There are certainly a few things that have to happen before that is true, and the competition is very stiff with teams like the Bengals, the Eagles, and the Buccaneers putting out great trios at the position, but the Seahawks shouldn't be slept on.

On its face, Seattle already boasts one of the best rooms in the NFL with Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf.

Metcalf may be the more popular name, but Tyler Lockett has been a dominant WR1 for a few years now and makes a legitimate claim as the most underrated player in the entire league.

45 touchdowns over the past four years is staggering and not talked about nearly enough by the league as a whole.

DK Metcalf is also one of the best WR2s in the NFL, especially when you look at how difficult he is to plan for on defense. There aren't a lot of guys that are safe on an island against someone built like Metcalf.

Where this room is really going to start setting itself apart is with rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Many believed JSN slipped in the draft based on how dominant he was in college, and the Seahawks aren't going to complain with their steal of a pick.

Between these three, there are probably only two or three teams in the league that can boast a better room on paper, and all of that could change quickly once we finally see JSN play and determine how well he can feast when defenses scheme to stop Lockett and Metcalf.

Once that finally happens, a lot more people are going to start giving the Hawks a good bit more attention in terms of playoff contenders.

Even replaceable play from Geno Smith with this group of receivers is going to be extremely hard to stop offensively, and that with mediocre play from the defense could make Seattle a very real playoff threat that would be a tough out in round one.

Wide receiver as a position is becoming king. Seattle is lucky to have an embarrassment of riches in this department. Good things are coming.
