The Seattle Seahawks' search for a new offensive coordinator was not a speedy process, but they now have their man after it led them to a former division rival.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Seahawks are hiring Klint Kubiak as the replacement for Ryan Grubb.

Kubiak served as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints in 2024, but he essentially became available after the in-season firing of Dennis Allen.

Prior to that, he was the passing game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers under Kyle Shanahan in a 2023 campaign that saw the Niners go all the way to Super Bowl 58.

San Francisco easily beat the Seahawks in both their meetings in 2023, triumphing 31-13 and 28-16 in a season sweep.

While Shanahan is the play-caller for the 49ers, Kubiak had an input in the process, and the Seahawks will hope his experience in that system can coax the best out of Geno Smith and the passing game as well as the Seattle ground attack.

Seattle finished 25th in rush Expected Points Added per play in 2024 and 23rd in success rate on the ground in 2024.

By contrast, the Saints were 13th in EPA per play running the ball and 10th in success rate.

The prospect of Kubiak potentially engineering an upturn in the run game is likely to have been a key factor in the Seahawks picking him for the job, with Thomas Brown, Grant Udinski and Byron Leftwich among the other candidates considered.

Kubiak now joins a team that missed the playoffs despite finishing 10-7. The pressure will be on him to immediately turn the Seattle offense into a more complete unit. If he succeeds, the Seahawks could soon become a formidable threat in the NFC.
