The Seattle Seahawks and Pete Carroll shocked the NFL world on Wednesday, announcing that the 72-year-old head coach would be stepping down from his post and taking a special advisory role with the franchise.
Carroll spent the past 14 years as the head coach of the Seahawks franchise, leading them to a Super Bowl title against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. He's been at the forefront of the franchise's success for over a decade. Now, he's expected to step into the background, or at least that's what we're told.
Is that what the future holds for Carroll, though? Speaking to media members on Wednesday, he provided some insight into where he's currently at given this decision. Needless to say, this isn't an issue of him being old, tired, and worn down. He appears as energized as ever.
"I'm fricken jacked," Carroll told reporters on Wednesday. "I'm fired up. I'm not tired. I'm not worn down. You guys (the media) tried your best, you didn't wear me out. It's the end of the season, I'm supposed to go lay on a cot somewhere. I ain't feeling like that."
Carroll admitted that he doesn't exactly know what the future holds for him, but he's ready to accept whatever challenges and obstacles there might be.
"What's coming? I don't know," Carroll continued. "I've got no idea and I really don't care right now. But I am excited about it because there is a lot to learn, a lot to study. There are some great discoveries that are going to come our way. As my all-time mentor, Bud Grant, said, in not so many words, 'There's rivers to wade, there's waves to catch and there's mountains to hike.' That wasn't exactly how Bud said it, but I get it. There's some cool stuff that we're going to do here and I look forward to all of that."
Asked directly if he would consider another NFL head-coaching job in the future, Carroll declined to give a definitive answer.
“We’ll have to wait and see," Carroll said. "Today’s not the day. I don’t know that.”
It's safe to figure that if the right team and opportunity came knocking, that Carroll would consider it. The Seahawks wouldn't be able to decline an interview request should a team come calling during the latest head-coaching carousel. For the time being, Carroll is just thankful for his time as a head coach in Seattle, and all that it meant to him.
