The Seattle Seahawks appear to have their quarterback for the immediate future in the form of Geno Smith, but it's unclear what their long-term plan is at the game's most important position.
Picking 16th overall, the Seahawks aren't in a position to take one of the top three or four quarterbacks in the class.
But they could have interest in the man who led Seattle's college team, the Washington Huskies, to the National Championship Game, and they will get a chance to watch Michael Penix Jr. throw in person at the NFL Scouting Combine next week.
Penix will show off his arm during the on-field drills in Indianapolis, according to ESPN's Jordan Reid.
The Seahawks aren't an obvious candidate to draft a quarterback this year given Smith's success in the last two seasons and the holes they have on both sides of the ball.
On top of that, Penix, despite his success at the collegiate level, may well be seen as a reach with the 16th pick.
But, with Smith only under contract for the next two seasons — he will be 36 in 2026 — there is reason to believe the Seahawks might be interested in Penix or another quarterback in the second round of the draft.
As such, they figure to be attentive spectators when Penix runs onto the field at Lucas Oil Stadium to show off what he can do.
Penix, who transferred to Washington from Indiana, threw for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in leading the Huskies to the National title game. That followed a 2022 season in which he threw for 4,641 yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
The Seahawks last drafted a quarterback in 2018, when they picked Alex McGough in the seventh round. Prior to that, their previous quarterback selection was that of Russell Wilson in 2012.
