The Seattle Seahawks are sitting at 3-1 and have to be feeling very good after dominating the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
While there were some shaky moments, especially with Geno Smith missing some snaps and Jamal Adams immediately injuring himself again, the brightest spot in the game was able to outshine everything else.
Devon Witherspoon is an absolute stud. Dominance like we saw last night is worth celebrating.
There is no sense in wasting words: what we saw from Witherspoon last night was one of the best performances the Seahawks have ever seen from a defensive rookie.
In fact, that could end up being one of the best performances by a defensive rookie all season. This was the type of game that sparks a Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign.
The hype is here.
Sure, it was against the very bad New York Giants, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Witherspoon finished the game with seven tackles, two sacks, and an interception returned for a touchdown.
It is hard to say enough just how dynamic Witherspoon looked-even the stat line doesn't do it justice.
Witherspoon was in the frame on every single play. It didn't matter how far away he was, the rookie made a bee-line to the ball and did everything in his power to put a hit on the ball-carrier. These hits made Witherspoon look more like a safety; a fact that helped ease the loss of safety Jamal Adams.
If Witherspoon can play like this and disrupt the pass and the quarterback's rhythm at will, what are the Seahawks truly missing out on when Jamal Adams is off the field?
Now, it may be a little early to begin the "Jamal who?" schtick, but it is fair to say that Witherspoon playing to his top potential-the potential he showed last night, has the talent to single-handedly elevate this defense well beyond where it currently sits.
The Seahawks strike again with another great draft pick. Witherspoon staying at that level over the course of the year could make this an even more fun season than it has already been.
Seahawks have tough pill to swallow with S Jamal Adams
You have to accept it at this point.
