The game against the Giants last week has gotten plenty of attention from the media, especially with how bad New York looked, but it is fair to say the biggest story was just how well Witherspoon played.
With a lot of season left to play and plenty of opportunities to meet that level again, Devon Witherspoon is in a great position to start getting some attention as the Defensive Rookie of the Year, especially with Christian Gonzalez out for the year.
That game by Witherspoon was something special. Between getting to the quarterback, succeeding in coverage in big moments, and making tackles in the backfield, Seattle’s first pick did everything they drafted him to do.
Assuming that wasn’t a fluke, that level of play should put Witherspoon in a group with only one other player; Eagles rookie defensive tackle Jalen Carter.
If Witherspoon has been a force of nature, Carter has been a hurricane on the field. Philly’s rookie is well on his way to some All-Pro votes this year, so it is fair to say he is still the front-runner for DROY.
Based on everything we have seen, Witherspoon has moved into #2 for the award, which is nothing to turn your nose at. There is still a lot of season left, and play like we have seen over a season would be enough to easily put Witherspoon in the Jalen Carter tier of rookies.
Just wait. The Devon Witherspoon hype is going to get a lot crazier over the coming weeks.

They’ll be in much better shape.
