The NFL is a league where athleticism usually matters above all else. If you can't keep up with the unbelievable speed of the guys at the top, life is going to be very hard as you try to carve out a role for yourself at the highest level.
However, pure athleticism isn't everything. Players flame out all the time that are athletic freaks but unable to put it together where it matters.
That brings us to the interesting study of Jake Bobo with the Seattle Seahawks. People may love to bring up his 4.99 40 time for a wide receiver, but he has shut that conversation down with his play over the last month, and now he looks like a lock to make the 53-man roster.
Where is the disconnect?
In truth, there is a massive difference between the straight-line speed of the 40 and the actual skills that matters in the NFL. Some people would refer to the latter as "game speed."
Bobo lacks pure speed, but his game speed is no issue at all, and that is actually what NFL teams care about.
The same can be said for more than just this.
Every year, guys drop their draft stock by if they struggle in the measurable drills, but that doesn't mean they won't work out in the NFL. More than anything, this just shows that the tests are not perfect for determining who will and who won't be able to translate their game to the next level.
If guys like Bobo can make space and get open (including getting open deep) by playing the game, using their quickness (which Bobo doesn't lack), and run perfect routes, the NFL is never going to have an issue with their skillsets.
Looking back, this was a great addition for the Seahawks, and Bobo being able to do anything during the regular season will continue his campaign of proving the value of players that make break the mold as traditional prospects.
