As roster cuts get closer, fans across the NFL have begun their own suggestions for what they think their teams should do when it comes to one of the hardest stretches of the year.
Cuts are never easy, but sometimes the fan perspective is worth considering as a way of seeing a different view on the matter.
However, a recent proposal by some Seahawks fans on Twitter, the idea that the team should get rid of Drew Lock to add Will Grier, is categorically silly. Here's why:
Grier has recently started to get a bit more attention from the NFL world as a whole after it was announced that the Cowboys would be releasing him as a backup after trading for Trey Lance.
Grier was then given a game to truly show off his skillset in a pass-heavy game called by none other than Dak Prescott in a move to turn a few more heads towards Grier in a moment of good faith for a team that had no other choice than to move on from their backup.
The journeyman backup did well, completing most of his passes and showing off his arm and legs well, but that isn't enough of a reason for the Seahawks to add him at the expense of Drew Lock.
Grier is a career backup. Lock is a guy that has been a career backup but has some upside as a fringe starter in the right situation. There is a difference.
If Geno Smith went down for an extended period of time, Lock has the upside and the experience in the system after time in Seattle to step in as a starter and keep the offense afloat.
On the other hand, Grier has no experience in this system and has never proven that he is a reliable option in a starting role.
While this does all look silly when you lay it out, there was a decent bit of traction behind some of these posts, so it is clear that some within the fanbase are undervaluing what Lock brings to the table greatly while also overestimating the value of stats in the preseason.
It needs to stop. The Seahawks are set at quarterback, and that isn't going to change.
