Seahawks defense forced mayhem for Drake Maye during Super Bowl win

If you were one of the millions of Super Bowl LX viewers, you saw the same thing. The Seahawks defense had Patriots quarterback Drake Maye running for his life on numerous occasions.

Seattle slowed the Patriots running game and forced a struggling offensive line and many unproven pass catchers to beat them. They couldn’t. A blend of pressure and tight coverage downfield made life hellacious on Maye and exposed some of his deficiencies as a young quarterback.

Seattle’s defense has made it a trend to dominate against quarterbacks in the Super Bowl, though, so this isn’t particularly new territory for them.

A potential dynasty forming for Seattle’s defense

Of the bottom ten worst EPA/dropback performances in the Super Bowl since 2000, the Seahawks defense is responsible for three of those over a 20-year stretch. The first came in 2006 against Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, while the second was Peyton Manning in 2014.

The only other team to make that list more than once is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it is hard to imagine their current defense getting back to that form anytime soon. With that, it is fair to give the longevity aspect of this type of dominance to the Seahawks.

The latest was yet another pendulum that swung so heavily in favor of Seattle that many people gave up on New England by halftime. The offensive line was struggling so badly that hurries and sacks seemed inevitable for the Seahawks defense, no matter the adjustments the Patriots would make.

The Legion of Boom became a prominent moniker for the Seattle defense during the 2010s that created havoc and played with an intensity we don’t often see in the NFL anymore.

This unit proved that sort of mantra can still take hold in today’s league, and players like Devon Witherspoon, Nick Emmanwori, Byron Murphy, and so many more deserve plenty of credit.

At the helm, head coach Mike Macdonald should also get his flowers. In just his second season as head coach for Seattle, he’s transformed this defense into one nobody wants to play against for years and years to come.
