Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday and is expected to miss the rest of the Seattle Seahawks' offseason program.
As Schefter notes, Woolen should be ready to go for training camp. Still, it's not the news the Seahawks want to hear. Especially since it's regarding one of their best players.
Woolen had an excellent rookie year. He was a finalist for the 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year award and tied for the league-lead with six interceptions. The former UTSA product was easily one of the draft's biggest steals and should be a fixture on the Seahawks defense for years to come.
The knee surgery explains why the Seahawks re-signed Artie Burns on Monday. Burns played just 16 defensive snaps over the course of three games in 2022, so it's not like he made a big impression, or anything. But, with Woolen's recovery timeline, Clint Hurtt's defense needs someone to step in and keep the competition going. It helps the Burns is also familiar with the system.
As it stands the Seahawks' current cornerback room is composed of Mike Jackson, Devon Witherspoon, Coby Bryant, Tre Brown, Isaiah Dunn, Jerrick Reed II, James Campbell, Arquon Bush, Ty Okada, Lance Boykin, and the aforementioned Woolen and Burns. So, they clearly have bodies, but it's a lot of inexperienced bodies. Having a veteran like Burns allows the 'Hawks to have a guy who knows how to handle an NFL offseason, as well as help the youngsters out.
It'll be interesting to see how Woolen's recovery goes. Everything should play out fine, but knee surgery is never something you want to hear when it comes to NFL players.
