Shedeur Sanders may have just given Deion Sanders a reason to go against what his son said and watch him play in the NFL
The rookie quarterback is already taking a nice step with the Browns.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders was humbled back in April when he slid to the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Since then, the rookie quarterback has done just about everything right—outside of a few traffic tickets.
Sanders has taken a business-like approach to his first NFL training camp, even going so far as to ask his own father not to attend for a reason that commands respect.
“He didn’t want me to come,” Deion Sanders said recently. “He was like, ‘Dad, I may get three or four reps in practice. I don’t want you seeing that. I’m not where I want to be. Let me get where I need to be.’ He ain’t mad. He’s like, ‘I got work to do, but I’m going to put in this work. When preseason comes, watch me work.’”
Well, the time has come for Shedeur to get more than just a few reps. Deion may want to reconsider and make plans to watch his son take the field in the NFL.
Shedeur Sanders Set to Make His First NFL Start Against the Carolina Panthers
Though it’s only the preseason, the former Colorado standout is set to make his first NFL start. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Sanders will start Friday’s preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Cleveland is currently dealing with multiple injuries in the quarterback room and won’t risk playing Joe Flacco in the preseason opener. Flacco remains the favorite to start Week 1 when the Browns open the regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett are both nursing hamstring injuries, and even Sanders recently experienced some arm soreness. As a result, the Browns signed a familiar face in Tyler Huntley, who is expected to see action against the Panthers.
This could be a split-game scenario, with Sanders playing the first half and Huntley taking over in the second.
The Browns haven’t traditionally played starters much in the preseason, so it remains unclear how long most of the first-teamers will be on the field. However, Panthers quarterback Bryce Young and several starters are expected to play, giving Sanders a valuable early opportunity to showcase his potential.
