For the longest time, the Pittsburgh Steelers were known for having one of the best cultures in the NFL.
But after last season's collapse, some started to point at some cracks in that foundation.
Well, former Steelers safety Eric Rowe just added to those concerns with more behind-the-scene information of what has been going on in the Steelers locker room…
Eric Rowe says Steelers didn't study like they should
“It was more about what the guys did outside of practice. In New England they all studied outside of practice – they took it home,” Rowe told Steelers Takeaways. “I didn’t get that same feeling from other teams like Pittsburgh. There were some that did in Pittsburgh but the majority of the players didn’t do it like they did in New England. They didn’t take it in like they did in New England.”
Rowe may have only had a short stint in Pittsburgh, playing in three games and starting one in 2023, but he played nine years in the NFL, three of which resulted in two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots, where he was a contributor on defense.
So he knows a thing or two about winning and preparation, two things that seemingly have eluded the Steelers in recent years.
Yes, these are professionals but preparation and study habits start from the top down. If everyone is bought in and believes in the process, there are no questions about extra studying or preparing.
And we have tangible evidence as recently as this calendar year that similar cultural issues have become all too common in Pittsburgh.
By the end of the season, we had players calling out their coaches, rookies sitting out games and team leaders showing a lack of effort in the playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens.
So it's not a great sign for the Steelers, especially when you consider where their roster stands. But every season is the opportunity to start a over, and we know that winning cures everything.
